Our Rating System Explained

We know what we like, and we quantify it in the rating system below.

0 Corks:  Do not drink this wine.  Headache and sass gut will result.  If it came in a plastic bottle or a box, you got what you paid for, otherwise, you should see the store manager about this.

1 Cork: If you add some sparkling water and/or ice cubes, you might be able to save this one.  Don't buy it again though.

2 Corks: Drinkable as-is, but not with much enthusiasm.  Not bad enough to put on the blacklist, but certainly not doing itself any favors.  Might be good for sangrias or mulled wine or something?

3 Corks:  A decent wine.  A few nice things to be said about it, and enough complexity to sound a little snooty when saying them.  Wouldn't seek it out again especially, but would not be disappointed to see it return to the table.

4 Corks: A good, delicious wine.  Won't let you down if you take it to a friend's house.

5 Corks: This is what you've been looking for, drinking all those bottles of wine.  Complex, interesting, delicious, laughs at your jokes.  One to take home to meet the folks.

Sterling Vinyards Sauvignon Blanc

Bought this for the label - so cute!  I have been burned before by organic wines, so I was suspicious.  It is tart.  Not at all sweet.  Quite delicious!

It is almost effervesant.  In fact, several bubbles have formed on the bottom of the glass since I began typing.

I wouldn't call it fruity - but if I had to pick one... kiwi?

Refreshing!  Finally a organic wine I can actually enjoy.  I wonder if they make a red.

RATING: FOUR CORK

Sterling Vinyards Sauvignon Blanc

Trader Joe's Coastal Zinfandel

If by "Coastal" they mean the soap - then they are pretty close.  It tasted more like Tide to me.  If you have to drink this to be polite, add mineral water 2:1 and the soap taste gets floral and is fairly drinkable... or you can tell your host that you have just that instant decided to go on the wagon.

Trader Joes Coastal Zin

RATING: ONE CORK

Mount Eden Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

We recieved this bottle as a gift from our friend Alice.  Oh my...so delicious.  Think dark cherrys, oak, but really complex and mineral-y.  It is the kind of wine that makes you want a fireplace.  Truley lovely.  Made the bottle we drank after it taste like crap.

Mount Eden Vineyards Cab

Black Mountain - Painted Ridges 2008 Pinot Noir - Napa

5 bucks or so at Trader Joes (not bad for a Napa).  Pleasant natural cork, and a label that won't embarass you if you tote this to a pot luck.

Black Mountain 2007 pinot

Opens with a hint of grape kool aid and cranberries.  Kinda flat until it breathes a few minutes, then it gets a bit punchy - not unpleasantly so. Tannic, but without being overly acidic.  Good mineraly mouth feel, like you just had a snoot of well water.  After about 30 minutes air time, it sharpens quite nicely, so definitely one to breathe.

RATING: THREE CORKS
